Jim Halfpenny in a bona fide expert on mammal tracks and tracking, and this is an excellent book on the subject. If one were to buy one book on tracks and tracking, this would be the one to purchase. The book covers animal movement in addition to the form and size of tracks of individaul species. Also included are techniques for recording field observations, identification of sexes, and determining the age of tracks. Information on mammal scat is also included.

Unlike other field guides, this guide provides a comprehensive system for identifying tracks and interpreting behavior from those tracks. I have successfully used this guide for "clean" tracks as well as very messy tracks for which a "picture and size matching" approach would be useless.

I bought this in preparation of a summer in Yellowstone. I have learned from many of Dr. Halfpenny's books. I espscially like his annual Yellowstone wolf charts.

This is a great book to identify prints of animals. I have a cabin in the woods and I like to know what's in the area

Great book to have on a tracker's shelf. I do not think this book should be the "soul" book an individual buys. If you would like to have just one book on the subject, Elbroch and Rezendez are the book you need to look at. This book is for gaits and behavior.

Good info but basic information. Could be more advanced on reading subtle sign.
